Large asteroid narrowly passed earth this afternoon

1944 PC1 which is a 1km long asteroid safely passed earth at midday today, passing 5 times further than the moon is from earth. Next time we will come this close to this asteroid will be in another 200 years.

According to NASA, it flew past at speeds of 45,000mph at a distance of 1.2million miles from earth.

You can watch a visualisation of the asteroid here on NASA's asteroid watch twitter.

It has been listed as no threat to humans, but it causes some great views.

You can watch the asteroid pass from NASA's website from Italy's virtual telescope project, Rome.
